#DanUnder - Dan Goes Down Under

By Gap 360

Last updated: 19th September 2014

Last month Gap 360's Dan said 'bye' to Brighton, and 'HELLO' to Melbourne as he made the move over to join our Australian team. Thing is, Dan hadn't actually been to Australia before.... (eeek)

We all knew that Dan would LOVE Melbourne. Surprise surprise, he's in love with the joint. We thought we'd check in with Dan to see how he's been getting on #DanUnder (we're PROUD of that one, we must admit!).

Hiya Dan! We're so excited about your move to the Aussie Gap 360 office, how've you been getting on?

Really Good! It's been a really easy transition as the people here seem to be so friendly. Not a coincidence really - Melbourne was voted the friendliest city in the world recently. In fact, Australia had five or six cities in the top 10.

This trip was your first time out to Australia, is it everything you expected it to be?

And more! You can really see why Australia is a hotbed for people wanting to emigrate and come here to work and travel.

We know you were a little bit nervous about coming out to Australia on your own - any tips for other solo travellers?

Talk to everyone and don’t be afraid to pop into a coffee shop or a barbers/hairdressers and talk away. On my first day here I didn’t know anyone so I went for a walk down Chapel Street and had coffee in a few different places. I opened up all of my conversations with…’I have only been here a few hours’ people are full of advice.

What's life like in Australia for British backpackers? Tell us about a typical Friday night in Melbourne...

The great thing about Melbourne is that it doesn’t really matter what day of the week it is there is always something on and with the vast array of rooftop bars, restaurants, coffee shops, bistros and nightspots. There is something for everyone. If you want to head out for some good food, there is always a place around the corner. If you fancy something a bit more hard-core and a crazy night out REVOLVER on chapel street is open from Friday night to Monday nonstop except for a short clean up break in the middle. It’s crazy.

If one of your best mates asked you whether they should come out to Australia, what would you say?

I believe everyone should experience living abroad once in their life. It teaches you a lot about the world and about yourself and how you grow and learn as a person…….go for it and take every opportunity with both hands. Say YES to everything……..well almost everything
