Seasons 🌸

Japan

Although famed for its cherry blossom season (and rightfully so, they are beautiful!), Japan is a year-round destination! From late March to early April, spring draws crowds to Tokyo and Kyoto. The streets fill with wonderful hues of pink, and locals celebrate Hanami - enjoying the cherry blossoms with parties and picnics under the colourful trees. Travellers can enjoy cooler temperatures paired with sunny skies during this time of year, as well as during Japan’s autumn from September to November. Instead of the iconic pink trees, however, you’ll witness aesthetic orange leaves!

In summer, Japan is hot and humid, with vibrant festivities and even firework shows to enjoy. Japan also makes an excellent winter escape, especially for those dreaming of world-renowned ski resorts.

South Korea

South Korea follows very similar seasons to the UK, enjoying all 4 seasons throughout the year. The hottest time in South Korea is summer from June to August - the best time for beaches and mountains. Meanwhile, winter from December to March is cold (temperatures can drop as low as -10°C) but aesthetic. Fill your camera roll with white blankets atop mountains. South Korea is less famed for its ski seasons, so its scenic resorts and gentle slopes are perfect for beginners!

Did you know that South Korea also enjoys the iconic cherry blossom season? The best time to see South Korea’s cherry blossom is from March to April, creating an even more picturesque Gyeonbokgung Palace in Seoul, and lining Jeju Island’s peaceful streets. You can also enjoy cherry blossom festivals in South Korea during this time, symbolising a time of renewal!

Japan or South Korea?

Both countries follow very similar seasons, with the cherry blossom season being the most popular time for travellers owing to the spectacular natural beauty. Japan and South Korea are both year-round destinations, with sunny summers, aesthetic autumns and wholesome winters.

Food 🍜

Japan

Japanese cuisine is globally loved, but nothing beats enjoying this delicious food in the destination itself! Uncover Michelin Star restaurants (Fun fact: Tokyo is home to the most in the world!) or dive into budget-friendly street food. Each dish you sample is as mouth-watering as the next. Japan is easily one of the best countries in the world for food, so you’re sure to find a few new favourite dishes.

Here are a few must-try dishes in Japan…

  • Sushi: We’ve got to start with one of Japan’s most famous foods, sushi! Even the most avid sushi-lovers won’t believe their taste buds on their first bite. Sushi is seasoned rice, typically paired with seafood or vegetables - often with seaweed as well. You’ll have the chance to make this delicious local delicacy on our Journey Through Japan group trip.
  • Ramen: Warm, comforting, and delicious. Tuck into steaming broth, topped with meat, vegetables or egg. Remember to practice your chipstick skills!
  • Mochi: Japanese desserts are becoming ever more popular in the UK. These Japanese rice cakes went viral on social media just a few years ago, selling out in supermarkets nationwide. Mochi, a sweet, soft but chewy treat, is a must-try on your visit.
  • Matcha: Matcha-lovers will be in their element in Japan. With origins linked to Chinese tea culture, the delicious green drink is vital to Japanese tea ceremonies. Matcha represents tranquillity, and has grown in popularity, used in lattes and desserts.

South Korea

Korean food spread across the table

South Korean cuisine is a rising star, known for its bold flavours and colourful combos. Korean meals focus on community, with tasty side dishes often served in the centre of the table for sharing. This means the experience of eating is as important as the food itself! Seoul is the perfect gateway to trying Korean food for the first time. Gangnam district is particularly known for its foodie spots, and street food in Gwangjang Market is not to be missed. Meanwhile, fresh seafood is a highlight in Busan and on Jeju Island!

Here are a few must-try dishes in South Korea…

  • Korean BBQ: The perfect example of communal eating, Korean BBQ is cooked in the centre of the table. Feast on marinated meat or vegetables, delicious
  • Kimichi: Typically a side dish, Kimchi is a staple of fermented vegetables, commonly napa cabbage. When you first try Kimichi’s flavours, it’ll be clear why this food is so popular.
  • Bibimbap: Translating as quite literally “mixed rice”, Bibimbap is white rice mixed with seasoned vegetables, fried egg and chilli pepper.
  • Bingsu: This shaved ice, topped with sweet fruit, condensed milk and red beans, is sure to cool you down on a hot summer's day in South Korea.

Culture🫰

Japan

Japan’s respectful and refined culture is reflected in its rich cultural heritage, from the precision of tea ceremonies to the quiet dignity intertwined in its various martial arts. Politeness is highly regarded in Japanese culture, and bowing is a reverent way to greet someone. When speaking Japanese, locals will use differing levels of honourific language to reflect social status.

Society in Japan prioritises collective living, with consideration for others and communal harmony placed above individual desires.

South Korea

Travellers in traditional Hanbok at South Korea

South Korea is generally considered less formal compared to Japan, although politeness and respect remain important when visiting. The use of honorifics in the Korean language reflects Korean’s respect for their elders. There is a strong focus on family at the centre of the community.

Modern pop culture plays a big role in shaping South Korea’s identity today. Expect a fascinating culture in which age-old traditions mix with a hyper-modern lifestyle. You will find yourself watching the changing of the guard at Gyeonbokgung Palace, in awe of the beautiful hanbok - traditional clothing worn for special occasions. Only to then discover Gangnam’s giant hands, inspired by the viral ‘Gangnam Style’.

Japan or South Korea?

Japan and South Korea both offer stunning contrasts of rich history and ultra-modern pop culture. Japan is slightly more traditional than South Korea. Travellers will find South Korean culture more fast-paced and extroverted. Which is best depends on travellers' preferences, but both countries guarantee cultural experiences you’ll never forget!
