What is Gap Year Travel?

Gap year travel is, in essence, an extended break away, travelling to exciting destinations abroad. But, despite the name, gap year travel does not have to take up a full year, and can really be as long or as short as you like. It can also be taken at any time in your life, although the most common time is just before starting university, and just after finishing university. But gap year travel can also be in the form of a career break; a chance to get away from the world of work for a bit, and then resume your career refreshed and start anew.

Why take a gap year?

Gap year travel is embarked upon for many reasons. Some go simply to explore more of the world and experience new things. Some want to discover the ultimate in adventure travel thrills. Some dream of party travel experiences around the world. Some go to find paid work or for unpaid internships or work experience, to get a head-start on their career or university subject. Some travellers want to make a difference and volunteer abroad and be part of the solution to the world's problems. All of these reasons are equally valid reasons for taking a gap year. In the end, it's really about what you want to do, and what you want to get out of your gap travel.

The advantages of taking a gap year

Gap year travel is also very useful for adding that extra sparkle to your CV or personal statement, regardless of what you do during your time away. It shows that you're not afraid to try new things or work with new people, and that you can appreciate different cultures and languages.
