An epic adventure that spans over 10 years? Sounds like our dream getaway! And also the plot of Christopher Nolan’s new film, The Odyssey, based on the ancient Greek poem. The scenic landscapes featured are truly incredible and will leave you saying, “I wish I could go there”.
The best part is that you actually can! The Odyssey filming locations are places you can visit, becoming the main character of your own journey. Just watch out for a few mythical creatures along the way…
1. Greece

We’ve got to start with where our Greek hero, Odysseus, originates from. Get ready for long stretches of golden coastline, plenty of ancient relics, and memorable nights under the stars. With The Odyssey reportedly starring the Peloponnese’s rugged coastlines, this hidden gem is best for secret beaches that genuinely feel untouched.
Of course, you can’t travel to Greece without stopping in Athens. If you’re into Greek mythology, get ready, because the Acropolis is about to bring it to life. Wander the historic site, before running up Philopappos Hill for a view of the landmark at sunset, backdropped by incredible panoramic views.
Whilst you’re here, you’ll want to hop across some of the paradise islands (it would be rude not to!) How about sunsets in Santorini, beach clubs in Mykonos, and sunbathing in Corfu?
Greece Highlights
- Catch the sunset across Santorini’s iconic white houses
- Explore the Acropolis in Athens
- Swim in Corfu’s turquoise waters
- Enjoy cocktails at Mykonos’ Paradise Beach Club
- Spot shipwrecks whilst snorkelling in Ios

It’s no surprise that Morocco is a filmmaker's favourite filming destination. These landscapes are seriously otherworldly, creating the perfect set for massive franchises such as Game of Thrones, Dune, Gladiator, and now The Odyssey.
The UNESCO World Heritage site, Aït Ben Haddou, has been turned into the ancient city of Troy for the big screen. But this beautifully preserved village doesn’t only tell the stories you see in the movies; the fortified walls whisper centuries-old tales of when this was once a vital gateway between the Sahara Desert and Marrakech. Add in the breathtaking views of the valley and distant Atlas Mountains, and this becomes a spot you can’t miss.
Fun fact: Our Creative Marketing Coordinator, Sarah, ranked Aït Ben Haddou as one of her top highlights on her Morocco trip! And if that doesn’t convince you, we don’t know what will.
Morocco Highlights
- Sandboard down dunes in the Sahara Desert
- Wander charming medinas in Marrakech
- Get the full cinematic experience exploring Aït Ben Haddou
- Snap aesthetic pictures in Chefchaouen’s blue laneways
- Learn to surf along Taghazout’s sunny coastline
3. Italy

Dramatic volcanic landscapes and picture-perfect coastline? We’re there! Sicily is named as one of the most prominent filming locations for The Odyssey. And we can’t blame Nolan for wanting to feature these stunning islands as much as possible.
Pairing history with irresistible beaches, Sicily is the place where your travel dreams come true. Whether you want to read your fave book on dreamy shores or hop in a cable car up Europe’s highest volcano, a trip here matches every vibe. There’s no shortage of ancient Greek architecture to live out your very own scene from the movie - make sure to tick off the Valley of the Temples.
We’re sure you’ve got some of Italy’s most famous mainland spots on your travel bucket list, as well. Feast on all the gelato you can eat in front of Rome’s Colosseum and float down Venice’s canals. For an Odyssey-style adventure, you’ll want to pack in as much as possible!
Destination Highlights
- Enjoy beach days on Cafalù’s golden shores
- Eat your way through the historic street food markets in Palermo
- See one of the Seven Wonders of the World at Rome’s Colosseum
- Cruise along the sun-kissed Amalfi Coast
- Wander Venice’s winding canals
4. Iceland

Name a more cinematic destination than the ‘Land of Fire and Ice’…We’ll wait! Coastal scenes feature the ethereal black sand beach of Reynisfjara, as well as Landeyjahfn, where they built an epic Viking ship. The Icelandic Highlands and glaciers are so stunning that they create a surreal backdrop for Odysseus’ mythical journey.
You’ll be spoilt for choice for your own magical moments on a trip to Iceland, and you don’t even need a voyage to experience it. The Golden Circle begins in the capital, Reykjavik, and takes you to three unmissable sites. Witness the thundering Gullfoss Waterfall, gasp as hot springs erupt at Geysir National Park, and stand between tectonic plates at Thingvellir National Park.
Obviously, we can’t talk about magic without mentioning the Northern Lights. The sky in Iceland really knows how to put on its own show (no CGI necessary). Best seen during the dark, winter nights, watch red and green light beams dance across the sky.
Destination Highlights
- Explore the colourful streets of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik
- Venture the Golden Circle, spotting waterfalls and geysers
- Stand on the black sand of Reynisfjara Beach
- Trek through a glacier in Vatnajökull
- Watch the Northern Lights light up the sky
