Arrival & Orientation

Day 1: Arrive in Bangkok

You will arrive into Bangkok on day one, where you will be met at the airport and taken to a Bangkok guesthouse on the famous Khao San Road. You can take some time to relax and explore the area before meeting up with the other volunteers in the evening for your first real taste of Thailand.

Day 2: Bangkok Tour

On day two you will enjoy a city tour, visiting some of Bangkok’s legendary landmarks, temples and palaces. You can sample some tasty Thai street food and soak up the buzz of Bangkok, as well as taking a tour of the klong’s of Bangkok on a brilliant boat ride.

Day 3: Transfer to Surin, Welcome Meeting and Orientation

Today you will be transferred by train to the project location in Surin, in the heart of rural Thailand (accompanied journey of 6-7 hours). When you arrive at the project you will receive a full orientation, introducing you to your teaching or childcare placement and your volunteer role.

Day 4: Meet the Kids and Staff at Your Project

You will get the chance to meet the kids and staff and introduce yourself to everyone at the school or childcare centre where you will be volunteering.

You will be volunteering at either a childcare or teaching project from Mondays-Thursdays. A volunteer co-ordinator will accompany you to your project every day, departing Surin around 7.30-8.00a.m. Your volunteering day will end around 2.30-3.00p.m.

You can choose from EITHER a childcare or teaching placement:

Childcare Project

As a childcare volunteer you will be working with pre-school kids aged less than 5 years old, at a temple setting in a rural Thai community. By making education fun for the local kids, you can help them to become more confident and improve their social skills. Duties include:

  •  Teaching the kids basic English
  •  Playing games
  •  Singing songs
  •  Teaching them about health and hygiene
  •  Doing arts and crafts activities
  •  Helping out with schoolwork
  •  Preparing the kids’ lunches
  •  Settling them for their afternoon nap

Your other volunteer role is to help renovate and maintain the childcare centre, ensuring that the kids have a welcoming and inspiring environment in which to learn.

Teaching Project

As a teaching volunteer you can help empower children, teaching English to children between the ages of 6 and 15 years old, assisting teaching staff to deliver inspiring and engaging lessons to local kids near Surin. Volunteer duties include:

  •  Reading practice
  •  Writing practice
  •  Listening practice
  •  Speaking practice and conversation
  •  Games and activities

You will teach around 16 classes per week, with each lesson lasting for around 50 minutes. Each class has between 30 and 60 students.

Free Time

Free Time Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are free time for you to do your own thing. Surin is close to the Thai/Cambodian border, so you will get the chance to enjoy a fascinating mix of Thai and Isaan culture and experience an authentic taste of Thailand. You are perfectly placed to explore this beautiful rural part of Thailand, or hop across into neighbouring Cambodia to see the sights on a short break.
