If you’re looking for your next travel adventure, Central America is calling you. Packed full of everything a backpacking trip needs - adventure, culture, partying, new friends - you may not know where to start.

We’ve put together a list of the top 6 activities in Mexico and Central America that are sure to convince you that this is the bucket list destination of your dreams!

1. Tick off a Wonder of the World, Mexico

Whether this is your first or seventh Wonder of the World, standing in front of a place this famous never gets old. Chichén Itzá in Mexico is one of the most well-preserved relics from Mayan civilisation. When you think of Chichén Itzá, you most likely picture the iconic El Castillo pyramid, located in the centre and surrounded by the jungle. Seeing how impressive it is in person is genuinely jaw-dropping.

With an expert trip leader, you’ll learn about how fascinating the little details are, revealing how advanced Mayan culture was. Try clapping in front of the pyramid and listen for the acoustic phenomenon. The echo that bounces back mimics the sacred quetzal bird - you’ve got to hear it to believe it! Chichén Itzá is one of those bucket list places that completely lives up to the hype, with a few special surprises on top.

2. Snorkel with Turtles and Manatees, Belize

Did you know that Belize is home to the second-largest reef system in the world? From the paradise of Caye Caulker, beloved for its ‘go slow’ island motto, you can explore the underwater world of the Belize Barrier Reef. Sail to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, a protected section of the reef and one of the most breathtaking snorkelling spots.

Grab your goggles and dive in, swimming alongside turtles, sting rays, and maybe even manatees (sea cows!). With warm turquoise waters and vibrant marine life, it’s seriously irresistible.

Pro tip from Aimee’s Best of Central America trip: bring an underwater camera!

3. Hike up Acatenango Volcano, Guatemala

You've just found your next epic adventure. Embark on an overnight trek up Acatenango Volcano, hiking above the clouds and looking across volcanic terrain. There’s no better feeling than arriving at base camp, ready to watch the neighbouring Fuego Volcano erupt. This is a moment you won’t forget as the lava contrasts with the starry night sky.

As the sun begins to rise, continue your hike to Acatenango’s summit - a moment best experienced with new best friends. Soak up panoramic views of the dramatic landscape, and count how many volcanoes you can spot. It’s challenging, but so rewarding. Of course, you’ll earn some pretty serious bragging rights, plus the best Instagram stories (we know that’s not the most important thing, but it doesn’t hurt, right?)

4. Boat Trips Across Lake Atitlán, Guatemala

Nestled within a volcanic crater, Lake Atitlán is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, with views that even your wildest dreams can’t imagine. Towering volcanoes and lush highlands surround the tranquil waters, and a boat trip across the lake cannot be missed. Boating is also one of the best ways to explore the different lakeside villages, each with its own personality, from lively backpacker bars to laid-back spots. Walk along the shore, browse the traditional markets, and immerse yourself in local life.

After cruising across the lake, you’ll want to head up to the viewpoint at Rostro Maya. Watch the sunset as it dips below the horizon and orange hues reflect across the water.

5. Zipline Through the Rainforest, Costa Rica

Get your adrenaline pumping as you quite literally fly through Costa Rica’s rainforest. Zipline through the legendary Monteverde Cloud Forest, famous for its striking green nature and amazing wildlife. Glide between the trees, high above the forest floor, and soak up sweeping views of the jungle.

Costa Rica’s biodiversity is seriously unmatched (and even a favourite of David Attenborough, just saying…). Keep an eye out for tiny, but brightly coloured, tree frogs and adorable sloths slowly climbing through the trees. When you’re not zooming through the rainforest, walk across the iconic hanging bridges for an entirely new perspective. And, after dark, witness the rainforest come alive on a night safari.

6. Relax in Natural Hot Springs, Costa Rica

Once you've had your fill of adrenaline adventures, it’s time to slow down the pace and soak in La Fortuna’s hot springs. The nearby Arenal Volcano naturally heats these geothermal pools, creating a unique kind of spa experience. The setting couldn’t be more peaceful, in the lush rainforest with tropical birds singing around you. It’s easy to see why Costa Rica’s hot springs are one of the best bucket list travel experiences.
