Ever wondered what volunteering on a wildlife project is really like? Well, imagine waking up to the distant roar of lions, watching elephants roam free, and working side by side with rangers and wildlife experts to protect the Big 5 animals. Yep, we’re talking South Africa’s most iconic species! Awe-inspiring is the best word to describe it.
When you join our 2 to 6 week South Africa Big 5 Conservation programme, the dream of volunteering to protect wildlife becomes your daily reality. This is what a typical day at the game reserve looks like ๐
Morning: Safari Patrol ๐

You’ll rise with the sun, ready to start the day. After tucking into some bread, cereal, coffee and cheeses for breakfast, you’ll join the conservation team for the morning patrol. This is your chance to spot the Big 5 in their natural habitat. Lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalos are calling you! Whether you're monitoring animal movements, recording data, or observing behaviours, no two mornings are the same.
Mid-Morning: Get Involved ๐

By 10am, it’s time to roll up your sleeves. Day-to-day activities could include:
- Fence patrols to check for damage or breaches
- Feeding predators, learning about their diets and routines
- Helping with animal capture for medical treatment or relocation
- Replacing invasive plant species with indigenous vegetation
- Observing and tracking animal movement via GPS
You’ll work alongside a passionate team of wildlife experts, rangers, conservation staff and other volunteers to protect the animals and make a real difference.
It was a pleasure to get to know and work with the guides and rangers to take the opportunity to learn more about the environment and animals.

Lunch ๐ฝ๏ธ

After a productive morning, you'll head back to base for a well-deserved lunch. Meals at the reserve typically consist of burgers, chicken and chips, veggie dishes and potato casserole. You definitely won’t go hungry! It’s a great time to catch up with your group and share stories from the field.
Afternoon: More Wildlife & Bush Work ๐

The cooler afternoon hours are perfect for another round of patrols or hands-on projects. You could:
- Monitor animal behaviour
- Repair waterholes or maintain reserve infrastructure
- Assist with enrichment activities for predators
- Fixing the roads for game drives and patrols
- Help with species identification or anti-poaching efforts
Whatever the task, you’ll be contributing to the protection of this 6,000-hectare reserve and its many species of mammals and birds. Your working day typically finishes at 4:30 pm.
The biggest highlight of my trip was working with the animals. Planting trees and fixing roads really made me feel I was doing something worthwhile!

- An entertainment area with a TV and internet
- A games room with table tennis, table football and a pool table
It's the perfect way to end a wild day in the bush.
Weekends: Explore South Africa ๐
![]()
On weekends, you’ll have the chance to tick off South Africa’s incredible coastline and cities from your bucket list. The programme offers some optional excursions to the surrounding areas. Whether you’re exploring solo or with your fellow volunteers, you could:
- Explore the iconic Garden Route, including Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth)
- Chill out on the Eastern Cape’s beaches, like Plettenberg Bay
- Take a surf lesson at Jeffreys Bay
- Go kayaking or ziplining at Tsitsikamma National Park
- Spot dolphins and whales on the coast
Weekends are a great opportunity to experience everything that South Africa has to offer.
