Peru is the ultimate backpacker destination filled with wonders and epic activities! From the iconic landmarks of Machu Picchu and the Nasca Lines to hidden gems like Lake Titicaca or the secret oasis of Huacachina. A - Alpaca

Peru wouldn’t be Peru without the adorable alpacas roaming around! Native to South America and part of the camelid family, Alpacas have a fluffy fleece and are often seen in herds. They have an especially friendly nature and are frequently used for farming land as they are easy to take care of. Make sure to snap a cute selfie when you see one!

C - Colca Canyon

Talking of great backpacking adventures, Colca Canyon is the world’s second deepest canyon! It is actually twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in America. Located in Arequipa, this landscape is known for its breathtaking views and thermal springs. It’s perfect for hiking and stopping in the local villages around the canyon. D - Dance

Like to boogie? Well, Peru has got a few unique traditional dances for you to try out! There are dances like the Marinera, Huayno, and Festejo, each reflecting a unique cultural heritage. It’s great fun to try and learn!

E - El Misti Volcano

This grandeur volcano is over 5,800 meters tall and is known for being almost perfectly symmetrical. El Misti holds a lot of cultural significance, as during the Inca period, the volcano was the location for rituals and offerings. In recent years, historical artefacts have been found on the volcano. Visiting El Misti is a real adventure experience! You can partake in hikes or admire the towering beauty from afar. It's a fascinating destination.

F - Festivals

Peru is full of festivals all year round, so clear your calendar. Each festival celebrates cultural diversity and has its own fun-filled days… Inti Raymi, Fiesta de la Candelaria, and, of course, carnival! Expect music, costumes, dancing and more when checking out a festival in Peru.

G - Gold

Peru is one of the world’s leading producers of gold. In Peruvian civilisations like the Incas, gold was highly valued and thought to be the ‘sweat of the sun’. Frequently used for religious artefacts, ceremonial objects and even embellished temples, gold is deeply culturally significant. There are also many myths and rumours about legends of lost gold and even gold cities waiting in the depths of the Amazon rainforest.

H - Huacachina

Huacachina is known as the secret oasis of South America. Nestled in the dunes, you’ll be stunned at this dreamlike destination. This little village is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Ica. I - Inca Trail

King Kong is a traditional Peruvian dessert with many mouthwatering layers. This sweet treat is made of cookies and filled with alternating fruit spread and manjar blanco layers (a sweet Peruvian spread). The layers can have different varieties of flavours, some including peanut butter. Be sure to try one of these tasty desserts when in the North Area of Peru (Trujillo) where you can also visit the unique Chan Chan, an UNESCO Heritage site.

L - Lares Trek

The Lares Trek is an alternative trek to the Inca Trail. The hike is ideal for those looking to tick off Machu Picchu but desiring to get off the beaten path and admire the raw scenery of the Andes. Expect to be amazed by the mountain views, stunning rural villages and steamy hot springs before finishing the trek at the iconic landmark of Machu Picchu. M - Machu Picchu

N - Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines hold such a fascinating history they are a total must-see! Found in the desert are giant ancient geoglyphs, which are believed created over 1,500 years ago. It’s recommended to take a plane ride over the desert to check out the etchings from above. They feature different shapes of animals, plants and geometric. O - Ollantaytambo

Visit this charming town, and you’ll be hidden amongst the Valle Sagrado also known as the Sacred Valley in English (read on to the letter ‘V’ to learn about this epic valley), surrounded by beauty. Ollantaytambo is known for its impressive stone structures that overlook the jaw-dropping views of this renowned valley. Take a walk around and see the advanced engineering of the Inca civilisation. P - Pisco Sour 

Pisco Sour is Peru’s iconic cocktail! This alcoholic drink is made with the country’s traditional grape brandy… pisco. Frequently offered as a welcome drink, this cocktail is a drink of national pride, even celebrated annually! Once you taste the tangy citrus yet sweet flavour, you’ll be asking for more.

Q - Quechua

Quechua people are descendants of the ancient Inca civilisation. Quechua is the language and cultural heritage of the people living in Peru. Although speakers are more prominent in rural areas, it is recognised as one of the official languages of Peru. The language has been adapted into daily life, music and traditions. T - Titicaca

Lake Titicaca straddles over the border of Peru and Bolivia. This picturesque destination will have you in awe. Soak up the scenery and admire the staggering mountains towering over the deep blue lake. W - Weaving

Weaving is a fascinating entrenched tradition in Andean communities that has been passed down through generations. The technique of weaving is used to create textiles by hand or on pedal looms. The materials used are often made from alpacas, llama or sheep wool and are dyed with natural colours from plants and minerals. Each piece is suggested to tell a story… pretty cool, right?

X - Xocolatl (Chocolate)

Chocolate has a deep history in Peru and is renowned for its fine cacao varieties. Cacao was cultivated thousands of years ago by indigenous tribes in the Amazon rainforest. The tribes used to drink the cacao beans and taught this to others. It’s said to be some of the best chocolate in the world… so be sure to try some!

Y - Yungay

Yungay is a backpacker’s dream. Think chill vibes, incredible food markets, and epic hikes like Laguna 69 right on your doorstep. Tucked near Huascarán National Park, it’s all about jaw-dropping views and adventure. Don’t forget to take a moment to uncover the beauty of Llanganuco Lakes. Yungay contains a rich history, such as bouncing back after an earthquake makes this place even more impressive. Grab your stuff and explore!

Z - Zampoña

Zampoña is a traditional Andean flute, often used in Peruvian folk music and culture. This fun instrument is also known as a Saki. It has varying lengths to create different tunes and is usually made of bamboo or reed tubes. Hear this melodic sound at festivals, ceremonies and celebrations. What a note to finish on!
