Further trip information

There’s nowhere quite like New Zealand, and there’s no better way to explore New Zealand than by campervan! Whether you’ve got a month or just a week, and whatever your interests, there’s a perfect route for you. You can pick up and drop off at our Auckland or Christchurch depots, meaning you can take a round route or travel one way.

There are three main options:

Stay on the North Island (round route with pick up and drop off from our Auckland depot)

The North Island boasts perfect white sand beaches, geothermal wonders and a warm, subtropical climate. With a stunning coastline and some of the best beaches in the world in the Bay of Islands and on the Coromandel Peninsula, it’s the dream destination for beach bums. The central region, around Rotorua is a hive of geothermal activity with hot springs and bubbling mud pools, and in the South, Tongariro National Park is an otherworldly landscape peppered with active and dormant volcanoes. Rotorua is also the place to experience Maori culture and hospitality, with traditional performances, dining experiences and stays in a Maori marae on offer. If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan, you can get your Gandalf on in Hobbiton, and if you love a kicking craft beer and coffee scene, you can’t beat the picturesque capital of Wellington.

Stay on the South Island (round route with pick up and drop off from our Christchurch depot)

For the South Island, think pure, natural landscapes of epic glaciers, snow-capped mountains and spectacular fjords. With the country’s largest mountain, Mt Cook, the turquoise waters of Abel Tasman National Park, the glaciers of the West Coast and the jaw-dropping Milford Sound, to name but a few, you’re spoilt for choice here when it comes to natural beauty. With hip cities from Christchurch to Queenstown, the South Island does urban life in style too. And if it’s adrenaline sports you’re after, you’re in the right place. From bungee jumping and ziplining to kayaking and skiing, there’s something here for everybody. The South Island has a cooler climate, but it’s still warm in the summer.

Do a one-way trip that covers both islands (pick up in our Auckland depot and drop off in Christchurch or vice versa)

Of course, if you can’t choose between the islands, then why not do both?! With depots on both islands and an easy ferry ride between the two, it’s the ultimate Kiwi road adventure. You’ll need an absolute minimum of two weeks to cover the highlights of both islands (but we’d recommend taking much longer).

To help you plan your route, we’ll give you access to our easy-to-use app. It includes information on campsites, accommodation, special deals and petrol stations, making trip-planning a piece of cake! Download our trip notes for more detailed itinerary suggestions.

Our vans

All our vans are comfortable, spacious Toyota Estimas, with an impressive range of standard features. They sleep and seat at least 2 people and each vehicle has a sleeping area, gas hobs, fridge, and freezer, bedding, linen, cutlery, crockery, stereo and more.

Choose from our 4 rental options, designed to suit every price range and travel style, from budget through to luxury (download our trip notes for more detailed information).

Standard insurance is included and there are two upgrade options if you want complete peace of mind for your trip. You’ve also got 24-hour roadside assistance included!

Arrival information

You can pick up your camper from our centre in either Auckland or Christchurch – it’s totally up to you. You’ll need to book the date and time of your campervan collection before pick-up though. Make your way to your collection point at the pre-arranged time and date and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!

You can either return your camper to the same depot you collected it from, or to the other depot, meaning you can plan a loop route, or finish up in a totally different location. Again, you’ll need to prearrange the date and time of your drop-off, and it’s important you stick to this or further charges may be applied. You’ll need to make sure you’ve refuelled and are returning your camper in the same condition you collected it in.

Accommodation & meals

One of the best things about travelling by campervan is that all your accommodation and transport is sorted! Our campers range from five-seater to two-seater vehicles, and all are able to sleep up to two people.

They come with all the camping gear you'll need, from bedding and linen to gas cooker, pans, cutlery, utensils, cups, plates, fridge-freezer or cool box, and a whole lot more! The cooking equipment means you can make your own tucker while you’re on the road – a great way of keeping down trip costs!

After you’ve booked, we’ll give you access to our free app to find the best free and budget campsites in New Zealand, most of which will come with shower units, toilets, and barbecue areas. But New Zealand also allows ‘freedom camping’ in many locations (essentially pulling up in some of the most gorgeous places on Earth and spending the night!

Minimum age & eligibility

You’ll need to be a minimum of 18 years old to hire and drive one of our campers. You’ll also need to hold a full, valid driving licence, which you’ll need to bring with you.

British citizens don’t need a visa to enter New Zealand as a visitor for up to 6 months. However, you will need to get a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority before you travel. This can be applied for online or via a mobile app. You will also need to pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) when you apply. Please note, visa and passport restrictions can be subject to change. Please check before you travel.

Visa rules and regulations are subject to change. Please check the relevant embassy websites for up to date information.

Covid safety

This trip is designed with your safety and wellbeing in mind. As a result of Covid-19, many of our suppliers and partners around the world are introducing new policies and procedures surrounding health and safety in response to the Coronavirus outbreak. As the state of travel is evolving these new safety measures will adapt over time, and will be different for each trip. Here are some of the changes you may see on your trip:

Arrival safety meetings
Most trips have an arrival meeting on the first day where the guide or local team will run through the trip, the safety protocols, and to answer any questions you may have. Now more than ever it is important you arrive in time for these meetings.

Proof of vaccination or negative covid test
For the safety of all travellers, at the start of some trips you may be required to show evidence that you are fully vaccinated (14 days after your second dose) and/or show evidence of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of the tour start date in order to join the programme.

Updated hygiene and safety procedures
Our suppliers and partners have health and safety procedures in place on all of our trips. These protocols will be updated and adapted as a response to the Coronavirus outbreak, dependent on local restrictions and laws.

Transport and accommodation choices
Our suppliers and partners choose the accommodation and transport on our trips very carefully, and you may see a change to what would normally be used as a response to the outbreak. This may involve such changes as enhanced use of private transport or quieter accommodation.

Trained and knowledgeable staff
Our staff in the UK are trained to help you with your trip before you depart and answer any questions you may have. In addition, the local team and guides on our trips are there to help with any health and safety concerns and to ensure our trips run safely and smoothly.

Reduced group sizes
Some trips will run with reduced group sizes to start with. You may find that trips are more intimate and chilled, whilst still being packed with fun and adventure.

Healthcare
Your guide or the local team will be on hand to help you seek medical attention should you require it during your trip. As medical facilities and standards can vary around the world, you should ensure you have adequate travel insurance in place before you depart to cover you for any medical emergencies.

24/7 emergency support
We operate an emergency phone line for our travellers abroad. This is operated by a UK based member of staff 24/7 if you have a genuine emergency or urgent matter that you need attending.

It is important that you take measures to make travelling safer for yourself and others around you. Ensure you frequently wash your hands, cover your face when you sneeze and cough, bring and use your own hand sanitiser and facial coverings/masks, and enable social distancing where necessary. You should also ensure you listen to the instructions and guidance of the local team at all times, and follow all local laws and restrictions.
