About the Project

This fantastic orphanage project works with a number of local orphanages which offer permanent homes to orphaned kids or provide a temporary place of sanctuary for children, becoming a haven of hope for abandoned or bereaved kids.

Why are Volunteers Needed?

The orphanages employ full-time local staff but their vital work is supplemented by part-time volunteers who play a crucial role in the day-to-day running of the children’s homes. As a volunteer you can play an important role in providing much-needed hope, care, love and attention to children who have had a difficult start in life.

Your Volunteer Role

As a volunteer you should:

  • Care about the welfare and quality of life of the kids first and foremost
  • Be gentle, kind and patient
  • Be reliable and ready to take on the daily responsibilities that come with caring for disadvantaged kids
  • Be a team player
  • Feel confident working around kids
  • Be able to set firm boundaries

Working with babies and toddlers

At some orphanages you may be working with babies and toddlers. Your role may involve:

  • Nursing and changing the babies
  • Helping at mealtimes
  • Playing games
  • Taking the children for walks in the local area
  • Taking children to clinic check ups
  • Organising their living space and bedrooms
  • Washing clothes
  • Administrative duties to help the home run smoothly

Working with older children

Some of the orphanages work with older children, aged up to 18, some of whom are HIV positive or need regular medical attention. Your role may involve:

  • Teaching subjects such as English, maths, arts & crafts, science or music
  • Helping with games, sports and craft activities
  • Assisting at meal and bath times
  • Helping with household duties
  • Learning to cook traditional Tanzanian recipes

As a volunteer, you’ll be rewarded daily as you see the change in the kids’ behaviour and mood as you show them the love and attention they deserve. Make an impact and change kids’ lives in Tanzania.

Your Volunteer Hours

Depending on which orphanage you attend and how structured their routines are, your daily activities and hours will vary. On a typical day at an orphanage, volunteers can expect to work between 9am-12 noon and 2.30pm-4/5pm, with a lunch break, from Monday to Friday. Your exact hours will be agreed on your first day of volunteering.

Donations

A portion of your programme fee goes towards the support of the orphanage projects. Your donations are pooled and the project manager will discuss how your donations can be best used at the time that you travel. In the past, volunteer donations have helped make incredible changes to the orphanages, including building a new kitchen, installing a new water boiler and building new bunkbeds for the kids. Many of our volunteers also wish to get involved in further fundraising or make donations of clothes, shoes, or baby products. The project manager will discuss how your personal donations can best be distributed once you are in Tanzania.

Volunteer Permit

When you arrive in Tanzania you will need to purchase a volunteer permit. The local team will help you organise this. The permit currently costs around USD200 although this is subject to change. Please check the embassy website for up to date information.

Free Time

Alongside your vital volunteer role, you’ll also have chance to kick back and relax with your fellow volunteers, and explore more of the local area. You’ll enjoy weekly nights out where you can have fun and meet up with volunteers from other local projects around Arusha. Arusha has some great bars and places to go out and you’ll have plenty of time for fun and relaxation with the other volunteers in your free time! You can also book safari trips and take in some of the gorgeous wildlife that can be found in Tanzania, and explore a bit further afield. Tanzania is a spectacular country, so make the most of your time away and soak it all in!
