East Coast Travel Pass Route Options

This trip offers THREE amazing travel pass routes so you can see the best of Australia's East Coast by bus, train and ferry. Routes can be completed in a minimum tour time or you can make the most of the 12 months validity on your travel pass and hop off to stay a little longer in any of the destinations en route.

The travel pass route includes several compulsory overnight stop-off experiences, where you will enjoy unique adventures and activities. The cost of these is not included in the trip price.

Byron Bay – Brisbane – Noosa - Rainbow Beach

Begin your Kat pass in the laid-back hippy town of Byron Bay, where you'll depart and spend some time in sensational Springbrook National Park, where you can spot glow-worms and go on the amazing Natural Bridge Walk. Once you've communed with nature, drive onwards to the popular Gold Coast, famous for its sun, sea, sand, surfing and beach lifestyle. If you fancy a bit of free time in this beach resort, why not hop off for a sunshine stay? Then the bus takes you on to the buzzing city of Brisbane, where you will pick up and drop off travellers in the city centre, travelling along the stunning Sunshine Coast en route to the smart beach resort town of Noosa. Stop here for the night or head on to Rainbow Beach, gateway to Fraser Island. Relax and enjoy as you soak up the laid-back atmosphere and gorgeous views.

Don't forget, your travel pass is flexible, so if you want to hop off here to extend your stay you can - Noosa is a gateway to the fantastic and famous Fraser Island, so don't miss a hop across to this astonishing sand island.

Rainbow Beach – Emu Park

Jump on a local bus today then switch transport and make tracks on the 'Spirit of Queensland' train travelling to Rockhampton. A local bus then takes you to a beautiful beach resort in Emu Park. Chill out by the pool with a few beers and soak up the sun in this gorgeous location. Accommodation at this resort will cost around AUD35.

While here, you can opt to join an awesome Treasure Island Overnight Experience. Jump aboard a ferry that’ll transfer you to Great Keppel Island, a stunning island of 17 beaches and incredible crystal-clear waters. You can spend your day here snorkeling in the sea, looking out for colourful marine life, and stretching out on the warm white sands. You’ll also enjoy a treasure hunt activity around the island. Great prizes for the winners! The package also includes a turtle spotting walk and a delicious evening meal, as well as overnight accommodation. The cost for this overnight experience is AUD99, which includes transport, accommodation, activities and dinner.

Please note: If you arrive in Emu Park on a Saturday, you will spend a minimum of 2 days and 2 nights here before the next bus departs.

Emu Park – Overnight Train – Airlie Beach

If you booked the Treasure Island Overnight Experience you’ll head back to the mainland this morning. Enjoy exploring the pretty coastal town of Emu Park. Relax by the pool or opt to visit some crocs at a local crocodile park (extra cost).

Then catch an overnight train towards Airlie Beach. This modern train is not a sleeper train, but has comfortable, large reclining seats, a bar and a dining carriage. Arrive into the town of Proserpine in the morning, then take a local bus to Airlie Beach, the gateway to the wonderful Whitsunday Islands. Here your knowledgeable guide will teach you all about the Great Barrier Reef.

Airlie Beach – Magnetic Island

From Rockhampton, catch an overnight train towards Airlie Beach. This modern train is not a sleeper train, but has comfortable, large reclining seats, a bar and a dining carriage. Arrive into the town of Proserpine in the morning, then take a local bus to Airlie Beach, the gateway to the wonderful Whitsunday Islands. Here your knowledgeable guide will give you a session teaching you all about the Great Barrier Reef.

A local bus takes you out of Airlie Beach to the train, followed by a ferry ride out to tropical Magnetic Island. A local transfer takes you to your island accommodation, the perfect base from which to discover the wonders of the island. Local accommodation costs start at AUD28 per night. Nearly 50% of Magnetic Island is National Park, and the island boasts amazing beaches and abundant wildlife. You will enjoy a guided walk around the island. Spend some free time exploring the island or just relax by the pool or sip cocktails at the bar.

Magnetic Island – Tully

Depart Magnetic Island and head to Tully for an optional Rainforest Experience. Visit a swimming hole at the edge of the rainforest before spending the night in a historic country pub. The next morning you will rise early to climb to the top of Mt Tyson! This stunning mountain is blanketed with gorgeous rainforest and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. Then, it’s back to the pub for a champagne breakfast! Does life get any better than this? This overnight experience costs AUD57 and includes accommodation, activities and a cooked breakfast.

Tully – Cairns

If you wish to spend some more time in Tully, take advantage of your flexible travel pass to try some kayaking, whitewater rafting or rainforest walks. If not, head north on the train from Tully to Cairns, your final destination, where you will arrive in the late afternoon.

Sydney - Barrington Tops

An 8am start sees you say goodbye to Sydney and head out of the big city to the famous wine-making area of the Hunter Valley. Sip some delicious local wine at one of Australia's historic vineyards before travelling on through stunning countryside to your next stop, the World Heritage area of Barrington Tops National Park.

Staying in a wonderful private lodge on the edge of the National Park, your accommodation overlooks the impressive Barrington River. Opt to ride down the scenic river on an inner tube (extra cost). Keep an eye out for amazing wildlife as you ride downstream, including exotic birds, platypus and kangaroos. Then chill out in the hot tub! This unique overnight stay costs AUD60 (local payment) and includes accommodation, meals and activities. 

Don't forget your travel pass is fully flexible, so if you fall in love with the wild landscape of the National Park you can hop off and extend your stay here to enjoy some hiking, river trips or mountain biking at Barrington Tops.

Barrington Tops – Spot X Surf Camp

Take some time to explore beautiful Barrington Tops National Park this morning, before having your very own Aussie wildlife encounter. Visit a Koala Hospital and learn all about the care of these cute and iconic animals as you find out what the hospital does to help them. Your next destination is surf camp, where you'll settle into your waterfront accommodation and get set for some serious surf experiences. Accommodation costs start at approx. AUD40 per night. Surf's up!

Spot X Surf Camp – River Camp

Enjoy a free morning for some beach relaxation and then go off the beaten track for some remote exploration! Settle into your riverside camp, located in a stunning inlet of Solitary Islands Marine Park. Spot sea eagles and other marine life who live in the incredible scenery, or grab a fishing line and catch some fish or crab to add to your dinner, which will be made up of sustainable, local produce. Camp out in this remote and wonderful place and enjoy getting away from it all in this unique destination. This overnight stay costs AUD60, and includes accommodation, meals and activities. 

If you wish to spend longer here, and even try the famous Yuraygir Coastal Walk, you can make the most of your flexi pass and hop off for a longer stay.

River Camp – Byron Bay

Jump on a bus and make tracks for the legendary surfing and arts town of Byron Bay, visiting the lighthouse which perches at Australia's most easterly point on your way. Enjoy the laid-back vibe in this coastal town and sample some of the restaurant and cafe culture. 

Free Day(s) in Byron Bay

There's so much to do in Byron Bay, you can spend this free day making the most of all the activities on offer, or just chill and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Byron is the ideal place to get in some more surfing or kayaking, or you can take a trip out to the alternative town of Nimbin if you fancy exploring further afield. Byron Bay is a popular spot, so you may want to take advantage of your flexi travel pass and hop off here for a few more days by the sea.

Cairns — Magnetic Island 

Leave Cairns and head for Magnetic Island, stopping off in Townsville. Arrive at Magnetic Island and enjoy the wonderful beaches and forests here.

Magnetic Island – Airlie Beach

Enjoy the Forts Walk with your guide, or spend some time relaxing and exploring. Travel from Magnetic Island to Proserpine by train, then transfer to Airlie Beach, arriving at approx. 6.30pm.

Airlie Beach — Emu Park

Depending on your departure day, you will spend one or two nights in Airlie Beach relaxing or enjoying some local activities. Then head over to the chilled out resort of Emu Park. Soak up the sun by the pool, and enjoy a few drinks with your fellow travellers.
