About Fort Kochi

The school building project is based in and around the famous port city of Fort Kochi (otherwise known as Cochin). This charming town boasts beautiful historical buildings and unusual, giant fishing nets. Volunteer Building Project

Make a real difference as a volunteer at this schools building project in Fort Kochi. From Mondays to Fridays you will be helping with building, construction and renovation at a poor, government-subsided school in the area. The school’s infrastructure is in urgent need of help and support – currently the kids are learning in buildings which are in disrepair.

The goal of this brilliant renovation project is to provide safe, welcoming facilities for the children to learn in, by improving their classroom environment and giving them the best hope of a better education. By creating a positive space for kids and teachers alike you can play a part in this rewarding project.

Volunteer activities may include:

  • Tiling floors
  • Electrical work
  • Repairing and painting classroom furniture
  • Replacing windows and doors
  • Painting and decorating, including mural painting
  • Creating sports facilities
  • Creating a garden for the kids to play in
  • Creating a library
  • Improving computer facilities

A typical volunteer day will run from around 9am-5:30pm. There will be an experienced masonry/building tradesperson on hand with you at the project daily, to co-ordinate your building volunteer activities. Depending on the project you are working on, you may or may not work alongside other volunteers. Volunteers must be prepared to use their own initiative at the projects.

The cost of travel from your accommodation to the project site is arranged for you, but the cost is not included (please budget £2-3 per trip).

Please note: These itineraries are a guide only and may be subject to change according to the needs of the local community at the time of your trip. Volunteers should be flexible and ready to adapt to unexpected changes and new situations.
