This animal welfare programme offers participants a unique opportunity to gets hands-on helping out with animal care in stunning South Africa. If you are looking for practical experience working with animals and are keen to learn about veterinary care or animal welfare then this is the perfect project for you!

Divided into three main areas of learning, this programme gives you hands-on practical experience working with local South African wildlife at game reserves, agricultural livestock at farms and domestic animals in rural villages.

1. Working with South African Wildlife

You can expect to spend around a third of your time in South Africa working with wildlife in game reserves. Learning through both lectures and also practical hands-on experience, you will gain an insight into the following areas of animal welfare and care:

  • Health & safety of wildlife
  • Immobilisation and tranquilisation of animals
  • Game capture (this is seasonal and cannot be guaranteed, although we aim for each participant to take part in at least one game capture)
  • Animal management
  • Ecosystems services support & biodiversity preservation
  • Learning about local threats to wildlife
  • Learning about toxic and venomous animals
  • Learning about animal health and nutrition
  • Rehabilitation of wildlife or animals

2. Working with Agricultural Livestock

You will visit a range of local livestock farms and gain hands-on experience working towards livestock wellbeing. You can expect to learn about the following areas through both lectures and practical experience:

  • Health & safety
  • Basic animal health & animal behaviour
  • Immobilisation, tranquilisation & inoculation of animals
  • Animal management
  • Ecosystems services support & biodiversity preservation
  • Animal health and nutrition

3. Working with Domestic Animals

Many South African domestic animals are classified as at risk and vulnerable, and can suffer difficult living conditions. Help out with the practical care of domesticated animals in rural villages, townships settlements and in the newly established Community Veterinary Clinic in Chintsa and make a valuable contribution to animal welfare in this rural area of South Africa. You will be assisting in the following duties:

  •  Health & safety
  •  Community support services
  •  Understanding animal management in South Africa
  •  Basic domestic animal health & behaviour
  •  Immobilisation, tranquilisation & inoculation of animals
  •  Domestic animal health and nutrition
  •  Working with South Africa’s animal welfare agencies
  •  Visit and learn about the challenges faced by organizations like the SPCA

Free Time

The projects are located in and around Chintsa, in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. This gorgeous coastal location boasts a 15km beautiful beach, surrounded by natural forest and is the ideal chilled getaway spot in South Africa. Your evenings and weekends will be free to relax and explore this stunning area, try adventure activities or go on excursions further afield. Local optional activities include:
